7.4 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan. Tsunami alert issued.

  • 2,722 people confirmed dead; thousands remain missing.
  • Some 400,000 people were living in makeshift shelters or evacuation centers.
  • Three explosions and a fire at reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant; temperatures now rising inside two more reactor buildings. People living within about 12 miles of the reactors at Fukushima were ordered to evacuate, and those within about 20 miles were told to stay indoors.
  • The Nikkei stock index fell by 10.6 percent at the close of trading Tuesday.
  • 8,000 missing in the fishing village of Minamisanriku, population approx. 17,000.
  • 2,000 people in Minamisanriku who had been missing and presumed dead have been found, having fled to surrounding towns.
  • There are now teams from 13 countries aiding Japan’s Self-Defense Forces in search-and-rescue efforts.
  • The first set of controlled blackouts began in four prefectures outside Tokyo. Tokyo Electric, the utility which provides service to 45 million people in the region, said the cuts could continue for six weeks.

Breaking News of the Day: An 8.9-magnitude Earthquake struck some 80 miles off the coast of Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture (230 miles northeast of Tokyo) around 2:45 PM local time. It is the most powerful earthquake to hit Japan in recorded history, and the seventh largest of all time.
The earthquake reportedly triggered a 33-foot-high tsunami which was captured in part on live television:




Tsunami warning have been issues for 50 surrounding countries and territories, including as far away as the Pacific Coast of the United States (expected arrival times here). Evacuations possible in California.
The confirmed death toll currently stands at 288, but that number is expected to rise rapidly. Aftershocks are still being felt at this time.
